We cannot make a small room larger but one thing that can "fool the eye" just a bit is the use of seating that is on legs rather than upholstered to the floor. The ability to see under the sofas and chairs gives a view of the total perimeter rather than limiting one's view to the floor space between the furniture. It is always adviseable, however, to have at least one piece that is "to the floor" as an anchor. This may be a chair or sofa or a piece of casegoods like a chest, bookcase or secretary desk. It avoids the feeling that the room may float away.

A pleasant suprise at the Sewickley Garden tour

Yesterday, while attending the Sewickley Garden Club's second biennial garden tour, I found at one of the homes on the tour, an outdoor room setting using the furniture purchased at Linder's.

All of the gardens on the tour were beautiful, but I was there to see how the good people of Sewickley were setting up their outdoor rooms. While they are getting the hang of it, I noticed where touches from Linder's Outside gallery could enhance their outdoor living environment.

At Linder's I strive to bring to Pittsburgh unique furniture and accessories for outdoor living.

While walking from the pool area of one of the homes I noticed what looked to be an travertine table like ones I have in my store. As I got closer to the veranda I noticed the chairs and realized the furniture was from Linder's. The travertine table and chairs, all for outdoors, looked absolutely beautiful in the setting.

The whole day was alot of fun and I'm looking forward to the Sewickley Garden Club's next garden tour.

Ken Ashtari started with Ed Linder in 1989. He was hired to expand a small rug gallery that Mr. Linder had in his furniture showroom. The rug gallery grew rather quickly and all the while Ken was learning all the facets of the fine furniture industry. In 2005 Ed Linder had decided to retire and close the business. Ken continued to run his rug gallery in the same location and after a few months reopened the whole store adding new furniture lines and services. The original designers came back and some are still with us. In 2008 the outdoor furniture gallery opened. Many customers who came to Linder's in 1989 still come in today along with all the new faces we are seeing today.

Although it is always ideal to bring your outdoor furniture in, during winter months, space and weight of the furniture may make this a not so doable task. Here are some tips for storing your outdoor living room furniture in the winter.

TEAK-

Teak furniture requires little, if any, maintenance and can be left outdoors year-round to weather naturally. If you allow your teak to weather naturally, simply clean it thoroughly once or twice a year with a mild soap, water and a brush. If you prefer the golden-brown color of new teak, use a teak cleaner and sealer to restore your weathered furniture to its original luster. Follow manufacturer's instructions on the bottle, it's usually as simple as applying it with a spray bottle and wiping off the excess.

CAST ALUMINUM, WROUGHT ALUMINUM AND WROUGHT IRON-

Wash your furniture with a mild liquid soap and warm water. Scuff marks can be removed with a mild abrasive. If scratched to the bare metal, I recommend sanding with a 400 grit sandpaper, affected area only. Next apply matching top coat color. Factory matched touch-up paint may be available from the retailer. Covering the furniture is always a good idea, but not necessary.

STONE, MARBLE, TILE, GRANITE, CONCRETE AND FAUX STONE TOPS-

Cleaning with any mild liquid dish soap and warm water will clean up most spots. Avoid harsh abrasives or chemicals. For grout stains most retail grout cleaners will be effective. Over time, grout cleaners will remove protective sealant applied during manufacturing. Simply reseal the table top using any commercially available tile and grout sealer. Because of the freeze, thaw, freeze again.... conditions of Pittsburgh winters, I recommend covering or storing the table. If you cover the furniture, use a protective furniture cover that is breathable and water resistant and place a rubber ball on the table, under the cover to keep air moving.

FABRICS-

One of the best ways to keep outdoor fabrics looking good is to properly maintain during their use. Brush off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabric and wipe spills as soon as they occur. Before storing your outdoor cushions and pillows for the winter, brush off any loose dirt. If they do need cleaned , prepare a solution of 1/4 cup of mild soap and lukewarm water. Use a sponge or soft bristle brush to clean. ALLOW TO AIR DRY THOROUGHLY. Store cushions in a dry, clean area where there is ample air circulation. If you choose to leave the cushions on the furniture outside, be sure to cover with a protective furniture cover that is breathable and water resistant.

WOW! What a fantastic night. The sights and smells of fall are some of my favorite. Spending it with friends and family around an outdoor fireplace or firepit... What more could you ask for. The neighborhood kids always seem to find their way to our house when they smell a fire burning.

Hello! And welcome to Linder's Outdoor. A site dedicated to all things about living OUTSIDE... To start I want to introduce myself and tell you about things to come. I am the OUTDOOR DIVA and Linder's Outdoor is a division of Linder's Fine Furniture and Rugs, a Pittsburgh tradition for 28 years located in McKees Rocks, PA. Known for our unique, beautiful furnishings and rugs from around the world, Linder's Outdoor is no exception.

I am anxious to write about the trends, styles and processes of outdoor furniture and accessories and all the exciting things happening at the store. I will also keep you up to date on the awesome talents and projects of the various landscape architects and designers in the area.

Will you be dining al fresco, or planning a gathering of friends and family on the patio? I'll be in constant search of great grilling and drink recipes from renowned chefs around our great city, in the restaurants and backyards.
